Toshiba NB100 1.6GHz Netbook - Windows XP Home
The new range of Netbook mobile computers have become popular. The conventional bulk of standard laptops with their large operating systems, over complication of use and features, together with the rapid growing availability of mobile Internet are leading us to a new mobile computer technology. For some experienced users, the older pocket PDA's are no longer good enough, for they seem to lack the screen and keyboard ease we want. A Netbook Computer is designed for easy and mobile use on the Internet. Please note: To install software on a Netbook you will need have a external USB CD / DVD, a network share, an external USB drive, or some way of transferring the CD media.
Let's look at Toshiba's Netbook offer - the NB100:
The new 8.9" Toshiba NB100 is very mobile solution for work, home and school, or as a second PC. This unit has a very traditional-looking keyboard, and there's also a row of function keys. The glossy 8.9in screens runs at 1024 x 600 and the keyboard, while cramped, has keys that are a little larger than on the similarly-sized Eee PC 901.

- Easy to carry & travel with:
- 8.9" screen size
- 1050g weight
- small size - Black design
- Genuine Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
- USB Sleep-and-Charge (charge even when unit is turned off)
- Web camera & microphone for Skype use
- WiFi & Bluetooth
- 4-in-1 card reader for images and data
- 3 USB slots
- 120GB HDD
- Stereo speakers

Purchased the NB100 Windows XP version and very impressed. Fast, light and very user friendly it comes with trial Office Home 2007 and a multitude of other software. 3 x USB, Monitor out, ethernet, Bluetooth, wireless, all mod cons and the 8.9" screen is very sharp and bright. In essence I had to turn the brightness down indoors from the standard setting. Video playback is good enough for most resolutions but suits widescreen. The Atom 1.60Ghz CPU is fast and suits the 1GB ram without a doubt. I would have liked the webcam to have at least 1.3 million pixels but this one seemed to perform very well on the screen, at 600 x 400.
It is not possible to play iTunes downloaded films or TV progs in full screen -- the picture jolts and freezes. Having done some tweaks to improve performance I can now watch them but only if I reduce the size of the viewing window to about half the screen. Any more and there is a 'ripple' that appears across the screen about 75% up it when the picture gets busy.

This is the limit Microsoft sets for definition of a Netbook and their supply of the XP licensed media. However the chipset of the Toshiba NB100 does accept up to 2GB memory. With the Toshiba NB100 there is only one memory socket, so the original 1GB needs to be removed and replaced with a 2Gb unit. Many people have reported that 2GB works fine with this unit. |

It is interesting to note that the new coming offer of Microsoft's Windows 7 is just round the corner and offers less bulk and speed than the current Vista release. So for now, Windows XP or Ubuntu Linux is likely to be the best choice for any Netbook Computer. XP typically run's a little slower than Linux on this Netbook platform.
